This reduction is the result of a combined effort involving increased utilization of technology, data-driven proactive policing, a renewed commitment to community engagement, and critical partnerships.
Throughout 2025, we have integrated advanced technology into our operations such as our drone (Hawk One) and the SPPD Real-Time Crime Center. These tools have allowed for real-time situational awareness and precise deployments. With proactive patrols in hot spots identified through data mapping, the department saw dramatic drops in major crime categories:
Thefts: Decreased by 51.3%
Motor Vehicle Thefts: Decreased by 54.5%
Assaults: Decreased by 60.9%
“These numbers are not just statistics. They represent a safer environment for our families,” said Acting Chief Heyward. “Our officers are working every hour of every day to ensure that crime does not have a home in our community.”
A major contributor to this success has been the strategic utilization of state grant funds through the Maryland Governor’s Office of Crime Control & Prevention. These funds have allowed us to enhance our operations and technologies.
In 2025, we maintained an average response time of 2 minutes and 25 seconds, ensuring that help is there when residents need it most.
Beyond enforcement, the department hosted or partnered on 28
community events over the past year, with a heavy emphasis on youth programs.
By building trust and fostering relationships with the next generation, we are investing
in the long-term stability and success of the city.
In 2026, we aren't slowing down. We are focused on sustaining our
progress. We are constantly looking for new ways to improve and adapt to ensure
that the City of Seat Pleasant remains a safe place to live, work, and play.
